TRIKENE DISTILLERY

In the late 1700s the Trikenes family moved to Messolonghi, from Kefalonia. Her only dowry was a recipe for ouzo. Founders of the distillery were the brothers Panos and Tasos Trikenes. The first cauldron operated in 1901 on D. Makri Street, in the old fish market.

The cauldron was inside the shop. The ouzo was coming out of by night for the needs of the day. The original hangout is adorned by the old marble bench that has relief marks from the glasses on it. On the pedestrian street of the city, among the modern cafes, the distillery of Trikene resists in its own way. It endures unchanged since 1901, making and selling ouzo, mastic liqueur, banana, mint and cognac. For the recipe of ouzo we limit you to a simple reference of the herbs that are used ..."anise, fennel, coriander and batiana".

THE RECOGNITION

The people of Messolonghi were coming to the shop, which was in the fish market, at noon. It was, for them, a stop before lunch, but also the opportunity to say two words before going home. The shop had a motley crowd of various social ranking. In the past, ouzo was accompanied by something minimal, such as boiled potato with salt of Messolonghi, tomato, cucumber and radish. In front of its marble bench, which was maintained until the 1970s, lawyers and fishermen, merchants and wage-earners gathered in common groups. In the '80s, demand increased significantly, as “ouzeries” became fashionable and flooded the market. It was awarded at the Thessaloniki International Fair in 1932 and 1951. A traditional shop that has kept its glamour for many years. Old barrels and showcases comprise a reminiscence of another era.

THE PRESENT

You can find it apart from Messolonghi, in the Prefecture of Aetoloakarnania and in selected restaurants and “ouzeries” throughout southern Greece. Today it is held by Mr. Pantelis, son of the founder of the distillery, along with his wife Eleni and their son Tasos. The shop was a haunt of spiritual people of the city. Trikene ouzo is the favorite ouzo of Messolonghi. It is found in all “ouzeries” and is preferred to any other. The late Panos Geramanis said that here he had drunk the best ouzo in Greece. A genuine man of friendship, Sarantos Kargakos called it in an earlier text. The once beloved haunt of Kostis Palamas continues unscathed in time.
