IOANNIS ZAVITSANAKIS Speleologist Rescuer - Writer - Mountain Guide

Ioannis Zavitsanakis was born in Messolonghi. He completed his secondary education at the Palamaic School. He studied Archaeology and History of Art at the Kapodistrian University of Athens, Business Administration at the Technological Educational Institute of Messolonghi, Electronics at the Unieco Schools. He was taught Music, Hagiography and Metalwork.

He has been practicing Research Caving for 20 years, having explored about 300 caveforms in Western Greece and founding the unique speleological association (Society for Karstic Research), which he chairs. He is a member of the Speleological Department of the Athenian Associations P.O.A. and E.P.E.AN. His research is the source of information of the Aetoloakarnania Speleological Archive of the Ephorate of Paleoanthropology of Speleology of the Ministry of Culture, and important archaeological discoveries have emerged from it, such as the Nymphaeum in the lake cave "Cave of Gouvas" Mastros Oiniades of Messolonghi (2016) and the Neolithic findings in the cave "Red Cave" of St. Elias Aetoliko Messolonghi (2018). He participated as a speaker on "5 Aetolian Caves", at the 2nd Panhellenic Conference of Local History and Culture of Thestia (2016). He created the open and constantly improving with material from his ongoing research, electronic and printed, until now three-volume work, "Speleological Archive of Aetoloakarnania". Numerous articles of speleological - touring and politico-social content are published regularly in the magazine and daily, printed, and electronic press.

He is certified by the Civil Protection as a Rescuer, specialized in Mountain and Urban Rescue. He cooperates with authorities and bodies (Police, Fire Brigade, Prosecutor's Office, Forensic Service, etc.) in relevant operations (e.g., removal of military material of the Civil War from the cave "Hole in the Layer" Panagoula Alyzia, Ksiromero, hauling for 21 years of a missing farmer from the cave "Hole in Kremasti" of Kechrinia Amfilochia - findings that emerged during his speleological research).

He was a cross-country runner and a Physique Athlete (I.F.B.B. Mr Hellas, 5th 1986 - 6th 1987). He practiced numerous intellectual and manual professions (hagiographer - metalworker, proofreader in publishing houses, physique coach, etc.).

In addition, he has the appropriate skills for: the safe organization of mountain trips in areas without snow, which do not require the use of specialized technical safety means, the escort of groups or individuals in mountainous areas, the European Path E4, as well as in areas of natural interest, such as National Parks, Natura 2000 areas and other protected areas and finally,  the design of programs of day and multi-day excursions, the organization of outdoor activities, such as hiking, climbing, canyoning, and camping

His works that have been published: «Speleological Guide of Aetoloakarnania"(speleological book, 2005), "The Aetoloakarnania Caves" (speleological book - album, 2016), «Speleological Archive of Aetoloakarnania" - 2016,  "Heterotopia" (novel, fantastic literature - philosophical search, 2017), "Caves of the Country of Aetolians and Acarnanians" (speleological book - album, 2019) " Dystopia" (novella, fictional literature - philosophical quest, 2021). "Caves in Modern Greek Poetry"- 2021. Many more of his works are under publication.
