Lighthouse of Saint Sostis

Saint Sostis is a small island, located in the western part of the lagoon of Messolonghi and owes its name from the homonymous church that hosts. At both ends of the island are still the facilities of two “ivaria”, Vasiladi and Komma.

Its history is very important. In 1770, according to “Orlofia”, it was the point where the pirate fleet of the Dultinians fought with the fleet of Messolonghi and defeated it, while in 1827 it was the stronghold of Astingos against the Turks, who who at that time held the area of “Vasiladi”.

In addition, on the island of Ai Sostis, Lord Byron landed on January 4, 1824, heading to Messolonghi. On the island there is a lighthouse, which is visible from Tourlida, as well as the house of the lighthouse keeper, which is now abandoned. There are even the remains of the old Customs.

The church of Ai Sostis celebrates on September 7, where worship events are held, organized by the Association "Friends of the Lagoon" in collaboration with the Metropolitan Church of Saint Spyridon of Messolonghi and the Holy Metropolis of Aetolia.
