Monastery of Saint Symeon

The historic monastery of Agios Symeon, "t 'Ai-Symiou" as the locals call it, is located at the foot of Arakynthos, about eight kilometers east of Messolonghi. The monastery was built in 1740 by the Abbot Archimandrite Tarasios Tsoumaris and was the place where the tragic epilogue of the heroic Exodus was written on April 10, 1826. A large white cross has been erected near the monastery in memory of the fallen fighters.

The monastery was later destroyed by the troops of Ibrahim and Kioutachis and was rebuilt in 1836 by Archimandrite Ioannikios Aggeletos. In 1973 it was renovated at the expense of the First Diocese of Aitoloakarnania.

It is a picturesque church, Mount Athos style, which has been declared a Historic Monument. Built in a magnificent landscape, with dozens of tall trees to "embrace" it that seem to protect it.
