Ancient Theater of Kalydon

The first theater is located in ancient Kalydon which was one of the most important cities of Aetolia. Prominent part of the distant historical heritage of Kalydon is the myth of the Kalydonian boar hunting, described by Homer in the Iliad and its participation in the Trojan War along with four other Aetolian cities (Chalkida, Plevrona, Olenos and Pylini) with a total of 40 ships under King Thoantas.

Important historical figures associated with Kalydon are Diomedes, a very important hero of the Iliad and grandson of the king of Kalydon Oineas, son of the king of Argos Tydeas and nephew of Meleagros who exterminated the Calydon boar.

The ancient theater is located outside the walls of Kalydon, near the old national road of Antirrio - Ioannina, below the hill where Lafria Artemis and Lafrios Apollo were worshiped.

It operated from the 4th century BC. until the decline of the city in Roman times. It had a capacity of 6400 seats and its characteristic is that it has a rectangular orchestra in the shape of a quadrilateral with dimensions of 16 × 14m. approximately as well as the lower nine rows of the cavity follow the outline of the orchestra forming a Greek "P" (Π).
