TSIPOURO

Tsipouro is the geographical indication for “raki” of grapes in mainland Greece. It is a Greek alcoholic beverage that began its course about seven centuries ago in the monasteries of Mount Athos. Tsikoudia is the corresponding geographical indication for Crete and the Aegean islands. In other countries, similar drinks are Italian “grappa”, “arac” in Middle East and “zivania” in Cyprus.

Tsipouro usually has 36 to 45 alcoholic degrees. It should not be confused with ouzo, a drink with a different way of preparation.
