Oeniade Festival

The effort to promote the archeological site of Oeniade began in 1983 when the cultural team of the 1st Primary School of Katochi village, under the supervision of Mr. George Robolas, after having writing letters to the then President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Karamanlis, the Minister of Culture Melina Merkouri, the Archaeological Service and other competent bodies, succeeded in removing the corrals and huts that were inside the area, in order to make good use of it.

In August 1986, the then president of Katochi village, Mr. Gerasimos Kokotos, in collaboration with the Municipal, Prefectural Theatrical Department of Agrinio and the Theatrical Department of University of Kansas in the United States, decided, two and a half thousand years later, to resurrect the Theatre by uploading the comedy "ACHARNIS" by Aristophanes and the tragedy "Antigone" by Sophocles, in English. The reopening of the theatre was a very important cultural event for Western Central Greece as a new "Epidaurus" was born. Katochi village and its Cultural Center, in collaboration with the International Center for Ancient Drama under the chairmanship of the late Stelios Tsitsimelis, established a program of cultural action with excellent results. International symposia and conferences, the operation of a theatrical workshop, theoretical and practical training of students of theatrical studies and all kinds of related activities, began to take place in Oeniade. The result of all this activity was the inclusion of the ancient drama performances of the Oeniade theater, in the famous, Athens Festival.
