Bust of Kostis Palamas

As a minimum tribute to his huge contribution, the bust of our great poet was erected in Messolonghi in a place he had determined himself, just before we reach the current windmill, facing the lagoon of Kleisova. The unveiling was made by the then Mayor Mr. Christos Evangelatos and the construction was done on the initiative of the young men and women of Messolonghi, who were members of the  Friends of Letters, Arts and Sciences Association. The announcement of the construction of the bust was made by one of the pioneers of the association, later lawyer Mr. Takis Bagiorgas. Kostis Palamas replied with tears: "No honor was greater than this decision of my compatriots. Absolutely none. " And the poet's wife, Maria, the genus Valvi, said to Bagiorgas: "The poet is telling the truth, because yesterday the Minister of Education of France came and awarded him the medal of the Legion of Honor and he did not have this emotion". According to the narration of the lawyer Mr. Theodoros Pappas in a local newspaper, when the bust was ready in 1937, the Messolonghi students, V. Papatheou, Chr. Basagiannis and Bagiorgas, visited Palamas at his house, to ask him to attend the unveiling. But Palamas' wife, Maria, told them that: "The poet will not be able to attend. He is seriously ill. But he will write you two verses ". And Palamas wrote to them:

"I see the night shots with your dreams

and with the day-to-day hard struggles of the day,

holy waters of Kleisova and Vasiladi,

a small homeland, which you have lived greatly, for centuries. "

(July 5, 1937).
