Koulia Tower

A building of medieval origin with construction dated back to the second half of the 14th century, dominates the top of the municipal district of Katochi, near the church of Saint Dimitrios. The so-called "Koulia of Kyra-Vasiliki" took its name from Vasiliki Kitsou Kontaxi who became known as the wife of Ali Pasha of Ioannina. The house that hosted her for the last three years of her life is exactly what is also called the "Tower of Theodora" as it belonged to the despot of the Despotate of Epirus, Theodora Petralifa during the 13th century. Kyra-Vassiliki lived in it from 1831 until 1834 and the name "Koulia" comes from the Turkish word kule which also means tower. Right next door is the village church, the Church of Saint Dimitrios of Katochi.

A few meters below the tower, is the patron saint of the village, Saint Dimitrios and right next to the church the Mansion of Goulimis, where a great battle had taken place during the years of Ottoman rule. Today, are preserved the imposing paddock of the house facing Achelous and the large arches inside the mansion.
